I'm dealing with the photobucket issues. The site I'm moving to has some transfer tools that I've put in a support request but I'm still in a sort of shock about it.

So many tutorials are lost. And there authors haven't logged onto their journals in years. Some are semi dead but some images were hosted elsewhere.

My icons are still up for now but immortalje's icons have been down for two days now, I can see them because I follow her on photobucket but her icon journal is all broken images.

I have 5,600 icons that I've made through the year. The icon project I had started was transferring them to another account to separate my fandom life from my real life as well as to show from oldest to newest just how much improvement I've made through the years.

But now it's on hold.

The new icon hosting site is for fandom arts and RPGs I'm hoping it's a good one.

But I'm also mourning the site I've used since 2004 and the icon communities that have been dying through the past few years but at least you could still find the old icons and tutorials but now so many are replaced by unsightly images.

Fuck you photobucket. You could have said, hey you need a paid account to use this feature. And I would have happily paid for the cheaper plans to host my little icons. It's a hobby after all, wouldn't have even complained, would have just paid up like i did years ago. But demanding nearly 400 dollars a year?

It's just little things I made in photoshop for fun. It's icons that I do to give something to the fandoms that see me through my anxiety and depression.

You cut off your nose to spite your face. And people don't need you anymore for that price, especially when I could create my own website to share my icons for less than 200 a year... and I could have my own domain name...

I had wondered when that happened when I got around to finally closing those 20in20s. Although I had assumed it happened longer ago!

I checked out their plans and once I realised they put that 3rd party hosting on the most expensive one - well, I figured I might as well say goodbye. I might not have done it for the cheapest, but most certainly not for the most expensive!
I won't be changing all of my past posts, but I'm considering trying to find a new place to upload all of them and just do a blanket post with a (single) link. Unless I ever start making icons again.

I wonder how many members are going to leave entirely or merely abandon their accounts over it...

Also, where are you movig your icons to? I might have to create some icons after all - I just can't seem to find any for Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them...

I'm using https://nickpic.host but someone on IJ offered to host my icons on her server and I'm considering that option also...

They seem pretty nice there and they were able to transfer all but 268 of my icons over from photobucket without me having to do anything.

I've created an account and started uploading. I'm doing it by hand just so I can focus more on the order structure. And filter out some of the really old icons (jpg) that have nothing going for them.

Some of those old icons still look great, but some are just results of my playing around and I don't feel like carrying them with me. I'm contemplating taking that step on my hard drive as well. It helps that I've set up an svn tool (inspired by the tools I use at work) to back up all of my icons for easier transfer between computers. So, even if I do delete them, they'll still be in there.

I sort of regret not doing it by hand. Ironically the photobucket account that I posted my Rose Tyler icons and my aos icons to hasn't yet shut off the direct linking.

I'm trying to organize all my icons but I want to delete some of my older icons after making sure I still have them on my computer.

I might save a few just to see how far I've come but some of them are just awful.

The fun part was actually after I uploaded all of my DW icons and then realised I'd skipped the "Doctor" folder and then realised that I don't want 2000+ icons in one folder and (aside from River) there was a pretty clear cut between 10 and 11. I then went through all of the icons I had already uploaded and any icon that took place during the 11th and 12th Doctor's time was moved to a different folder. To my surprise they actually equalled out. I guess I made enough 10 icons to cover the huge amount of Amy and 11 icons :D

The hardest part was figuring out "Just when is this Dalek icon from?" Or "In which episode did the Cybermen look like this?"

Should I ever make more icons (which will probably feature the new Doctor as well) I'll probably start a new folder for that era.

I might go through the folder again and delete some more. And I probably will on my hard drive. I'm considering of just keeping two icon folders: one for all the ones I ever created and one where I pick from when I want to upload new userpics. The png files shouldn't take up too much space. All of the psd files I've kept are the bigger issue.

Also, I haven't seen Fantastic Beasts yet.. maybe I'll see if it's on Netflix

I saw it when it came out (since I could watch it in English in the cinema) and I absolutely loved it.

I've read some comments about the plot that weren't as favourable, but quite frankly - I don't care how likely something small (but that the entire plot kind of hangs on) as long as it's fun to watch.

It's also refreshing that it's not really based on a book (although, I'd love to read a novelisation of it) as all it can look up to is the "school book" from Harry Potter and is as such much less dependent on "correctly" representing the sourcce material.

I might give it a try then especially since my beef with the later films is that they didn't stay true to the source material half the time.

By movie three Hermione quit feeling like Hermione but I did like the actress who played Luna.

And it did look cute. ^_^

Since I didn't like the last two-three books anyway, I haven't watched the movies past OotP. I mean, I'd love to see the scenes of Severus and young Tom Riddle, but otherwise there's nothing I really want to watch it for. I also think that they forced the Hermione/Ron a bit too much and pushed the characters too much into that direction and away from what they were in the books.

I also liked Luna and the actress who played her.

The only thing that disturbed me the most about Fantastic Beasts was actually Johnny Depp as Grindelwald (he's only got a short scene, but there's probably more to come in future films). He's as far removed from Grindelwald as I imagined him.

I quit watching the movies after Goblet. I've tried to watch order of the phoenix but I just can't.

But I have watched the Luna scenes...

Hmm Johnny Depp as Grindelwald I'm having a hard time picturing that.

I think I watched OotP with my mother. I probably wouldn't have finished it otherwise. Although, unless my perception is scewed, it's actually the book that inspires the most stories. All those "let's fix this" and "let's fix that" have to come from something :D

I've seen it and while it wasn't as jarring as I thought it would be, I'm still not entirely sold on that. And I love watching Johnny Depp movies. He just - I just can't see him as part of the Harry Potter fandom. Or it's just that I'm still kind of stuck on Pirates of the Carribean and Jack Sparrow and Grindelwald are as far removed from each other as possible. Or it's just the styling they gave him...

Sadly I came back from my internet hiatus just as everything died. Yeah, I would have done their cheaper plan and I may purchase a hosting plan for myself but first I have to learn how to make a website and how to keep it secure so that I can direct link and that others can't... But that might be more of a pain than I'm prepared to deal with for icons.

Even if I did find a gorgeous layout for my tumblr page that would enable people to categorize by both colors and fandoms as well as search for specific characters....

I can't help myself but wish them bad luck for that short notice stunt and the price they expect.

Until then, I'll keep looking for a good fit :)

Me too! I also think it's a last minute money grab before they shut down for good.

Me too. If not I'll figure out how to code and host my own damn website. I just want to make images and be able to show them to people. And while Tumblr is good for showing gif sets it takes icons and blows them up a larger size so they look pixelated and ugly on the phone.

I tried using Google Photo since I have Picasa an my computer and it would be so easy to use it to upload, but the default thumbnail is so large and you can't actually change the thumbnail size. So that idea died a quick death.

My google phone reconnected me to my forgotten picasa account and on occasion sends me photos from 2012. The other day it sent me Mushi's kitten pictures.

It's so easy to forget accounts you've created once upon a time and then for one reason or another stopped using... :)
