I think outside of minor cramps/having to go to the toilet more often the only sign I have is that I'm more tired than usual. But that is a state I also reach when I just haven't slept enough. So, not really a good indicator. As for the first - I'm still trying to figure out if I react to anything that I eat in the same way. So, still not a good indicator. Especially since I'd classify most of them as minor inconveniences. I guess I'm extremely lucky on that front when I think about what I hear from others.
Well, the theory for learning like babies sure sounds good, but not everyone deals well with that. I'm really bad when it comes to grammar, but there are languages where you probably ought to start with the grammar just because it has a big effect on understanding what's been written.
I only started learning Italian as I needed some credit points for university and all courses offered by my faculty were for more credit points than I needed. I stuck with it after that because I didn't want to let it go to waste. And it's funny what kind of words and phrases do get stuck in your mind even years later :D
Not sure how easy they are to find or which levels they're at or even how much of it still is a thing, but I do remember seeing some language channels on youtube (German and English at least and maybe some Swedish) where people do explain grammar and pronunciations to promote their native languages. That's certainly a cheaper way to try and learn. Of course, the downside is probably that you don't have direct feedback outside of what might be done in the comments.
