Not sure if I ever was both, but I remember once waking myself from a dream because it kept getting interrupted by someone going on a killing spree. Each time I ended up in a new scene and before anything could really start the next guy came up. I swear I woke up because I was fed up with that and the strong feeling that I was dreaming (within the dream).
That never happened again, but I sure could have needed that in some of my dreams. Just standing up and saying, "Screw this! I want a different dream!"
Fortunately, I'm not easily scared by what I watch before sleeping. However, I remember once while I was still at school, I rewatched some tv shows late one Saturday night (Sunday morning?) and I was down right scared to even go to bed. It might have been a Millenium episode. Luckily, another tv show I loved watching came on afterwards and it featured something like a guardian angel. It made it all better.
